One might have assumed he would have learned something from his last exploration-related disaster, but they'd be wrong. As if he ever learned any lasting lesson unless it involved actual injury. No, his curiosity had not been squashed, and he had not yet found a reason to ignore the impulse to range far and wide from the very small area he'd called home for the first third of his life. It wasn't like he'd left the place behind permanently, after all. Viktor fully intended to make a return trip after a few months and visit his parents.

Until then, he wanted to see as much as could. Which meant a lot of walking and wandering and really just giving in to whatever directional whim tugged at him at any given moment. Which was how he'd found himself somewhere around the southern foothills of Mount Ionax, where the air seemed to be increasing in warmth with every mile. He wasn't sure how he liked that. An interesting change from frigid weather and frozen toes further north, sure, but how long until the heat and the weight of his own fur took its toll?

Probably not for a few more miles, right? It wasn't that big a difference yet.

There was, however, one very annoying similarity to the last major landmark he'd decided to check out. And he really should have realized long before he'd gotten himself into such a spot. Viktor had no idea where he was going. Why was it, every time he thought some place would be interesting, it turned out he just got himself lost? He had learned from his time in the catacombs to mark his path, but it wasn't helping him much. A system of 'scratch that tree, then that one' was apparently only effective for sending him in circles. Fantastic. He'd started casting a soft light around himself about half an hour ago, but it was more to draw attention to him than for navigation.

Auru was in an... interesting state of mind following his most recent adventure in the Nesslewood. Perhaps the most 'interesting' thing of all was trying to learn how to navigate the place he now called home... for lack of a better alternative. He was rather confused, and still very much so prone to getting lost with every twist and turn he took in the wood, but he was getting slightly better at navigation.

Hey, a 1% increase was still 1% more than he had before. And was quite a lot more than 0.

He had started changing up the way he left marks for himself, carving different patterns to help differentiate which way he should go to get to certain areas.

To be fair, he didn't really have anywhere to go as of right now, but it was still somewhat soothing to see a certain pattern marked by his claws and know exactly what he had to do to get back to the tree with the split root. That was the only landmark he'd managed to come up with for right now, and as such he only had one path indicated by his markings, which was the path to the split root, but hey, if it worked, it worked. So long as he managed to keep getting prey, of which there was no shortage, and had somewhere slightly sheltered to sleep, he'd be alright. Right?

Goddess he sure hoped so.

But as he was trying to search out new landmarks in a vain attempt to familiarize himself further with the wood, something... rather peculiar caught his eye.

His nose was all messed up from the fog, and so his sense of smell was acting funny and he couldn't make out scents very well. (Or maybe it was the pine sap he'd gotten on his nose after trying to wiggle his claws to leave a certain pattern and accidentally getting his face too close to the trunk. Either or. Probably the latter if he was honest with himself.) But despite all that, his eyes were working just fine. And he certainly noticed the peculiarity that was the moving light that seemed to be coming from a short distance away.

It wasn't enough to be seen from a great distance, but he could just make it out from where he was, forepaws atop a rather large and knotted root as he tried to raise his point of view higher to get a better look.

What in the name of Danica was that?

Oh goddess, was it some sort of spirit? Some sort of magical being, like a wisp? Those were real, right? Oh goddess, was it dangerous? Wisps were just little balls of light, perfectly harmless, right? No wait... will o' the wisps? Was he remembering the name wrong? Were they even real? He thought his parents had told him stories about them, but were they real? Oh goddess, what if this wasn't a wisp, no, will o' the wisp, and was just trying to lure hapless lions like himself into it's grasp?

What even was it then? A monster? A lion? What if it really was a spirit, trapped roaming Isfera for eternity? Was it malevolent? Genial?

In the time that his mind was whirling with different possibilities, the small Praelia had removed his forepaws from the root, beginning to back up as he eyed the moving light with distrust, heart beginning to beat what was slowly growing to be a frantic rhythm in his breast.

Unfortunately for him, his attempts at removing himself from the situation while the fog yet obscured him were to no avail, as his back leg suddenly knocked into another high-growing root, causing a sharp flare of pain as the man immediately pulled the leg back on instinct.

"Ouch!"

It was only after the word escaped his lips that he clamped his jaws shut, suddenly standing much straighter and with wide eyes as he wondered if he had just royally screwed himself over.

Maybe it was better to starve and die in a forest than a cave? No. Probably not. Out in a forest, scavengers would pick his bones clean, and scatter them in all directions. In a cave, it was more likely all his parts would remain together and do...whatever dead things did in caves. Rot, probably. But at least his bones could stay together. Maybe sprout crystals, that'd be neat. Too bad he'd be dead, and wouldn't get to see what his own crystallized skeleton looked like.

It was easy to let his mind wander, there wasn't much else to do as he tried to figure out how to retrace his steps. His marks all looked the same and trying to follow his own scent was futile, he'd already gone in at least one circle. Maybe if he just picked a direction and walked long enough he'd eventually find the treeline?

'Ouch!'

Or! Someone who lived in the area? Viktor paused at the unexpected voice, leaving off his path to make a beeline for the source without putting much thought into what someone might think of a ghostly (glowing) blue lion seemingly materializing out of the fog.

Oh, damn, he wished he could see that from their perspective, too. It probably looked badass. Scary, but badass.

"Hello? Don't run, I come in peace!" Which was probably what something who didn't come in peace might say to throw off their prey, but whatever. But if they ran, Viktor would be screwed and forced to find his way out the very tedious pick-a-direction-and-walk route. Provided he could even keep to a straight line in the fog.

Now...where the hell were they?

Auru was about ready to jump off the edge of a cliff when he saw the light freeze, and then suddenly come running towards him. His eyes grew enormous in his head for just a moment, as the distant outline of an approaching figure just began to come into view, before he turned tail and leapt over the root behind him with a clean pounce.

Nuh-uh.

No way was he dealing with a spirit, genial or malevolent.

Not today, satan.

He didn't get much of a chance to go any further, so he settled for having leapt behind a tree root, hunkering down to the ground and poking the top of his head over the gnarled tree to peer at the approaching figure with wide eyes, ears back as he seemed to try and burrow himself into the soil in his anxiousness.

"Hello? Don't run, I come in peace!"

That's exactly what someone who didn't come in peace would say.

Auru Geniven did not trust it one bit, copper eyes peering nervously over the tree bark at the strange lioness... lion... person... who had appeared from the fog, surrounded by an ethereal glow that did not seem to bode well. Their pale coloration only added to the ghostly visage, and Auru had no qualms with admitting to having coiled his tail tighter about himself and pressing his belly further into the dirt as multi-colored eyes scanned the area.

When those hauntingly prismatic orbs cast over him, he gave the smallest of squeaks, pulling his head down to try and hide behind the root, throwing his paws over his head in some semblance of trying to protect himself. Oh Danica, please let the spirit have really bad hearing and not have heard him... he really didn't want to be cursed today...

Even though he should have known that spirits would roam these woods, the fog was too dense, and atmosphere too creepy for it to be otherwise. Of course poor souls got lost and perished in here, and of course they were out for vengeance on the living, wanting to drag those whose hearts still beat down with them to the abyss of their suffering as well. He should have known, but he still tried to make himself small and insignificant, tucking as far into the ground as he could in the hopes of avoiding detection.

Danica help him...
